Do you play Netball?

Sports is about exercising or enjoying it. A sport contains physical exertion in which an individual competes against others. Each sport has different rules, skills and techniques.

Netball is one of the sport that a lot of people enjoy playing or learn about. It is a game that involve positions like WD, WA, GD, GA, GK, GS and C. Some sports have a limited number of players. The rules are:

1. You are not allowed to run/step with the ball
2. There is no pushing others during the game
3. You're not allowed to hold the ball less than 3 seconds
4. When you shoot you can only take one step without both feet on the ground.

This sport can only contain seven players. Each player has limited line to pass. WD, WA, GD and GA has some line that they are not allowed to pass some of the line or go into the lines. Netball is a game for fun, for school or competitions.

Netball is a fun game to play with your friends or family members.  Netball is a game that is famous in some countries around the world. It can be a hard/tricky game to play if you don't know how to play!

We won the game!

On Tuesday the 26th of July, the Netballers went to the AMI Netball Centre at St Johns to represent St Patrick's School. We travelled to the Netball Centre by Co-op taxis which Miss Chao had booked for us.

As soon as we got to the Netball Centre, we all ran two laps from one end of the court to the other. When all the netballers had finished our warm up, we had a game of Netball so that when it was time for us to compete against the other team, we were ready to play. We all practised our defence, passing and shooting.

Before it was time for us to compete against the other team, the referee came and checked all of our fingernails so that we don't scratch our partner. Then it was time for the game and I was very nervous because my partner was taller than me.

After our game had finished, both teams shook hands and we all said, "Good game!" to each other. We also found out that we have won our game. Everyone played really well and we tried our best to defend and stay with our partner.

My favourite part was when we left the school in the taxi because I couldn't wait to play our game.

Learning Intention: We are learning to understand and use descriptive languages in our writing.

Success Criteria: I know I can do this when I use verbs to describe the action of our Netball game.

Oh no, it is our last Netball session!

It was a cloudy day on Friday the 27th of May when Room 7 had our last session of Netball.  I was so excited about learning more skills of Netball.

For our warm up, we jumped three times in different directions. It was very hard for me because we had to keep going until we completed the task. Tina said, “It was a fail, but that is okay.”

Next, we went straight into a game. Anna and Tina gave us each a position to play as. A team belonged to Tina and the other belonged to Anna. Tina had team Gold.  We were quickly organised into our positions and my opponent was Xyril.

Soon our game started. The first two goals went to team Gold. I tried my best to try and stick to my partner so that when his teammates try to pass the ball to him, I can defend it and pass it down to our team shooter Soane. When the ball was in play, both teams ran quickly to get the ball. We all tried our best defending the other team.

After our game, Tina told us to stand together so that we could take a photo. We all had a big smile on our faces when we took the photo. I felt very down because it was our last session. We all said “Goodbye!” to our coach Tina and her sister Anna.

I really enjoyed our Netball sessions and my favourite part was when we played the game of Netball because it was a lot of fun putting our skills to practise.

Success criteria: I know I can do this when I follow the structure of a recount to write about our last session of Netball: Orientation, events, conclusion.

Balancing is very hard!

One fine morning, Room seven went to the top court to play our first session of Netball. We did warm ups when we got there by jogging to the other end of the court and back. Then, we  introduced ourselves to the coaches by saying our names, our age and what we want to be when we grow up. I said that I want to be a person who would be looking after old people in the rest home. Our coaches names were Tina & Mark.

Our first lesson was learning to do a balance. We crossed our arms, and lifted one leg up then try and make our partner get out of balance. When that happened, you and your partner would have to jump and stand in a straight position with your legs apart. The second lesson they taught us was a chest pass.We placed the ball in front of our chest and passed the ball to our partner, pushed our body forward to make the ball go straight without dropping it. When catching the ball, we should make a letter ‘W’ with our fingers so that our partner would know that we are ready to catch the ball.

Afterwards, we had to get into three lines standing opposite the other two lines. Whoever gets the ball needed to pass to the left and run quickly to the right. We kept on going till Tina said, “Throw to the right and run to the left as fast as you can!” We switched back again to throwing the ball to the left and ran as quickly as we can to the right. It was way too confusing for me!

Later on we took a warm down as we talked about how our first session of netball went. Some of us answered positively by saying that it was awesome but some of us mentioned that we needed to work harder in improving our fitness.

Success criteria: I know I can do this when I follow the structure of a recount: orientation, events and a conclusion.
